Richard Branson…

… that’s my new mantra.

As I’m coming up the stairs to the office, exhausted from 4 days at Desire jewellery show, I’m reminded of a recent report I heard on the new wave of self employed people; how even though they’ve taken the decision to be self employed “they’re not doing full time self employed hours, so we’re not looking at the next Richard Bransons of the world”.

Even though I’m not new to this game and definitely do full time hours, that was it for me.

So whenever I feel like I’m coming of the pace or need to ‘G’ my self up, I just say to myself, “Richard Branson”.

Let it Reign - Amma Gyan for Jigsaw

The time has finally come for me to spill the beans on the biggest project of my career so far. I’m going to tell you the story from the beginning because I think it will show you how anything is possible…

In June 2011 I decided to take part in the Hatton Garden festival during London jewellery week. Notorious for diamonds and precious metals, I have to admit I felt a bit out of my depth.  The day didn’t get off to a great start, there wasn’t a tent set up for me, I was directed to the wrong place to park which resulted in a parking fine, which you can imagine I was most chuffed about, then I was plonked on the end of a row of people demonstrating silversmithing, whilst I was demonstrating how to look out of place, joy, although this did seem to work in my favor in the end. The interest I received from the other dealers and jewelers was amazing; passers by were commenting on how they had heard about me! Awesome.

After a while I got into the flow of things, was chatting happily with people when I spotted a potential customer, (you get to know what they look like after a while). I remember at this point thinking “oooo, I think she might buy something”, the following exchange of words went like this:

customer: this is lovely stuff

Me: thank you!

customer: who do you design for?

Me: eerrr nobody, just me, my own brand

Customer: you don’t design for anyone else?

Me: (OMG what’s happening here) no just me

Customer: Ok because I buy for Jigsaw and I think your designs would really work for us.

Me: (OMG, OMG, OMG, f**K f**K f**K, OOOMMMGG!!!) OK, cool, great! (aaarrrrggghhh!!!! be cool!)

You see people, I was found, spotted whatever you wanna call it! just like you hear about, I was just doing my thing when, bam! just like that, the opportunity I’d been working towards, hoping for, the thing that people thought wasn’t possible happened.

This was just the beginning the festival was in June 2011 and the collection I designed for them hits the stores this week. The learning curve and experience has been like no other. I’ve been in the accessory making, small business game for over 8 years so I felt I’d learnt a few lessons on the way, what not to do, how to design creatively but commercially… however even that didn’t prepare me for how challenging it was going to be to pull this off, whilst keeping everything else going!

It’s all about timing, and the ironic thing about when all this happened was that everything was on the up, the business was building nicely, the customer base was growing, and Christmas was around the corner so I was quite busy.

Running a retail business and a commercial wholesale business are two very different things. When I got into this craziness I said I don’t want to be wholesaler however you soon realise that this is a bit of naive and slightly romantic way of thinking. I soon learnt and for a while I concentrated on designing items that I could wholesale and some that I would keep for retail. It’s easier said than done, because you don’t want to compromise your design… I was once told you have to be commercial to be creative and I can’t tell you how true that is. Building up credibility can take a long time but you only give yourself a chance if you’re out there selling as often and as much as possible.

For more on-the-job business advice drop me a line, but for now, it’s back to the collection!

The initial plan was to take a few pieces from my current range, Masai, Ivy etc, but the owners of Jigsaw! (I know! nuts hey?) loved the idea of the collection so decided to go for something totally exclusive to them! This was great but also meant a totally different ball game, if they didn’t like what I came up with that was that, done, all over. Fortunately for me, out of the 8 pieces they requested, they chose 7, so yes I will blow my own trumpet, that’s pretty good going!

So we’re there the collection is agreed, the deadline is set, it’s time to start making.

There were times during this period when I thought, yep I really am a bit mad, the business changed overnight with additional staff, premises etc but all the while I have to tell you, I was loving it and still having boughts of random hysteria and chuckling to myself at yet another stroke of the Amma Gyan luck, but then again I think it’s what happens when you work really hard.

So if you’re ever passing The Strand, Kings Road, Kensington, Argyll street or in Guildford, pop into Jigsaw and look out for ‘Reign by Amma Gyan for Jigsaw’ hehehe, cool eh!

The initial collection:

The final selection:
Now lets make! Reign, moulded leather necklace with peruvian amazonite stones.
It took over for a while…
Then became a family affair
The girls hard at work.
Nadine on fire! look at her go!
The final days, kind of sad seeing them go…
Delivery day! this was a particularly satisfying shot!

Just say no!

No not the really bad, but seemingly catchy song from the 90’s, I just mean sometimes you just have to say no. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Today I’ve experiences the liberating effect saying ‘no’ can have. I totally get why toddlers love to say it so much, it feels great. The only thing is as we get older we find it harder and harder to say. Well I do, I’m always trying to fit things in, help when I can, give something ago, but often what happens is I end up paying for saying ‘yes’ too many times.

So that’s it, say it with me, NO! feels good hey - lets be three again… if only.

I’mPossible - a great forum for women of colour to meet, share experiences and be inspired!  Really looking forward to the next event.

Damn!

Damn!

Confession

Yes, I have one I feel I must share with you - learn from me…

The thing is, I have a massive competitive streak, it’s probably more like a full blown case of Wonder Women come Jekyll and Hyde - anyway it surfaces every now and then. Ordinarily this is a good thing, keeps me pushing, however occasionally it can lead me astray - blur my focus.

Focus is important and you really have to know why you’re pushing for something, what the main aim is and where along the path it will it take you.

Every challenge I’ve set myself has had a clear purpose; they’ve been stepping stones to the next level. So when a recent competition came around again and I found ‘wonder-Jekyll’ soaring to the surface, this time caped in an invincible-I-will-win cloak! I had to rein her in, “wo wo woo! - what’s happened to you? really?”

You see, if I’m honest, of which I feel I must be, I was pushing to win for all the wrong reasons. I was competiting for the sake of competition and for Pride - there I said it, shame on me… (at least I can admit it right?).

Pride never got anyone anywhere, so for that reason, I’ve decided I have to let this one go, it isn’t a stone I need to step on.

Must. Stay. Focused.

I’ve taken a little break from making this bag but I’ve found a new found love for her in spring colours!
Light blue and tan or cherry and tan, I think the blue will look great as a cross body bag as well.
Let see how I get… So much to do!

Mania Mia and Me… say that after a few!

Bioluminescence exhibition at Mania Mia

The current exhibition at the boutique.

The artist MILA NESTEROVA is sporting a familiar pair of leather earrings ;-) nice.

I’m very excited, this morning I had a meeting with the lovely ladies at Mania Mia about planning some events in store, we’ve been talking about it for a few months but now it’s going to happen.

The plan is to create a pop up mini emporium once a months with a host of independent designer items from Jewellery by moi along with others,  up cycled home wares, vintage clothing, art and lots more, it’s going to be great!

The shop is perfect for hosting events like this, the main space will be displayed as a show room with works by each designer so you can get a taster and then in the lower parlour you’ll be able to see the full range of what each artist has to offer.

There’s so much more that will be happening, this is just the beginning so keep a look out for what’s new.

The opening date is the Sun 11th Mar, perfect for taking your time to discover wonderful new things. There’s also a local farmers market every sunday as well, so put it in your diary, set a reminder - ‘New Kings Road Pop Up Emporium at Mania Mia’.

Chores and Play, know your customer

It seems like such a straight forward question “who are your customers”. I used to think I knew how to answer this question but over the years I’ve learnt that it’s not that simple.

You see you have to know them in the sense of how they manage their lives, how they spend their week, social activities, leisure activities etc.

Finding your customer is one of the biggest challenges small businesses face; sometimes they just stumble across you, but more often you need the know where to be seen, so that they can find you.

I’ve been popping up in Beautiful Interiors in Walthamstow for over a year now and it’s been great. I’m usually there on a Sunday - this was initially so that me and my boyfriend could have some sort of life and make the most of Friday nights. But what I realised was that I also chose that day because it’s the day that I do things for myself, relax, organise, be lazy, and lets face it playing shop isn’t that much hard work, it’s the fun part of what I do.

The interesting thing was that a friend of my who has her own similar business but offers a repair service pops up on a Saturday - this is the day when she gets things done.

So you see there are two very different activities and experiences here, one is the must do, list activity, the chore and the other is the indulgent fun activity, the play. So you see Saturdays were always good for my friend because taking something in to be repaired is on the list of chores, however I, having the product that is very much a indulgence, a treat, and often a gift, meant that Sunday was better for me. It sort of makes sense, the majority of people who buy from me do so when they are relaxed and have time to think and consider.

So with the cultural change that came with Sunday trading laws our life style habits very much changed. I see it in myself, Sunday is the day that we’ll visit a local market, a museum or take our time over lunch, so as much as there are no rules to this game I think I may have found a patten, not a rule but a bit of a pattern.

I’m on a mission…

… that gold medal will be mine! well, i’ll give it my best shot anyway.

Last year I won a silver medal for specialist media, pretty good, but you know I have go for gold medal.
